Survey: Evaluating Patient Partnership in Cardiovascular Research

Study Title: Evaluating patient partnership in cardiovascular research: A mixed-methods study

Principal Investigator: Dr. Kelly Cobey, PhD, [email protected]
OHSN-REB Number: 20230437-01H

Conducting research on patients without their input may result in incorrect assumptions about how they feel, their priorities, and how to treat them best. Involving patients in the research process has the potential to improve the application of research, facilitate clearer communication from research teams to patient participants, and enhance knowledge translation activities.

Furthermore, it allows for stronger implementation of customized prevention and treatment approaches, also known as precision medicine. However, despite the benefits of engaging patient partners as research team members, patient engagement is not a norm. There is limited understanding of how to conceptualize patient partnership, which creates a reluctance to implement or failure to do so effectively. We aim to provide an up-to-date perspective of cardiology researchers’ and patient partners’ perceptions and experience of patient engagement in cardiovascular research.

You are invited to participate in this study because we have identified you from Canadian cardiovascular societies, cardiology departments at Canadian universities, and local patient organizations as individuals who have been involved in cardiovascular research in any capacity (e.g. Researchers, patient partners, clinicians, research support staff). This consent form provides you with information to help you make an informed choice. Please read this document carefully and ask any questions you may have. All your questions should be answered to your satisfaction before you decide whether to participate in this research study.
